Surgeon Jonathon Kaplan works in remote parts of the world, under the extreme conditions of battlefields and disaster zones. His books "The Dressing Station" and "Contact Wounds" are vivid, wryly funny accounts of survival - his own as well as that of his patients - in places as diverse as Mozambique, Eritrea, Burma, Madagascar, Angola and iraq. Between hospital posts, trama-surgery teaching, writing and working as a medical advisor on TV dramas, he also travels as photographer, journalist, and documentary film -maker.

Crossing Cultures and the Art of Photography
Audiovisual presentation draws on the experiences of a working photographer in the field, his inspirations, attention to detail, highs and lows. In 1989 Paul completed three photo essays about British Explorers, Water and the training of Search and rescue Dogs,m all of which formed the beginning of his freelance careeer and gave insight into the various skills and tools needed for each subsequent assignement. He sees photography as a passport to a whole variety of encounters with people and place a Shaman in Mongolia, story tellers in Calcutta and bungy jumpers in Queensland; helicopters into the volcanoes of Hawaii, Iban longboats into the rainforests of Borneo and the nervous reationship with his camel, Marmaduke, in Niger's Tenere Desert.
