The
British Foreign and Commonwealth Office
advise against all
travel to the northern border area including the provinces of
Sucumbios and Orellana. Armed groups are active in these areas and
there is a risk of kidnapping and crime. On 17 August, a state of
emergency was declared in Sucumbios and Orellana.

Since 15 August, civil unrest in the province of El Oro has caused
considerable disruption to road travel.

We currently advise against staying overnight in Baños, due to the
threat of Tungurahua volcano erupting.

You should be aware of the risks of crime in all areas and take
sensible precautions at all times. You should be particularly
vigilant in poorer urban areas, after dark and on public transport.
We recommend that you do not travel alone.

The threat from terrorism is low. But you should be aware of the
global risk of indiscriminate terrorist attacks which could be
against civilian targets, including places frequented by
foreigners.

Australia is looking for 20,000 skilled immigrants to fill
vacancies in what has been described as its biggest recruitment
drive since the 1960s. An Immigration department spokesman said the
nation needed engineers, doctors, car mechanics and accountants.
Exhibitions in Europe and India will be set up to promote the
scheme, but officials say: “We are looking for skills from
anywhere.” Australia often comes under fire for its tough
immigration policies, though now analysts are saying that the
country is currently suffering from a serious labour shortage,
which is threatening its economic growth.

Russian authorities have recently announced that foreigners
applying for work permits must now undergo tests for six diseases,
including HIV, tuberculosis, leprosy, or the sexually transmitted
diseases syphilis, chlamydia or chancres. What's more, the
tests can only be carried out at often under funded and poorly
equipped state clinics, you are not allowed to be tested by their
own doctor or in foreign or private clinics. There have been no
reported cases of leprosy in Western Europe for at least the past
two years, according to the web site of the World Health
Organization. “Can you imagine some top businessman going to a
venereal disease clinic? They are not good places,” said an
official at a visa agency who asked that she and her agency not to
be identified because her business depended on its contacts within
the migration service.
